Routing Templates

The first time you create an assembly document after adding in SolidWorks Routing, a routing template is created. The routing template uses the same settings as the standard assembly template, but also contains special routing-related model data. (The routing-related model data is not user-accessible.)

The automatically created template is named routeAssembly.asmdot, and is located in the default template folder (typically C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SolidWorks\SolidWorks<version>\templates).

To create a custom routing template:

  1. Open the routing template that was created automatically.

  2. Make your changes. (For example, set different units.)

  3. Click File, Save As, and save the document with a new name. You must use .asmdot for the file extension.

To specify a custom template as the default template for new route assemblies:

  1. Make sure the folder containing the template is listed as a Document Templates folder in File Location Options.

  2. Specify the template in the Routing Template field in Routing File Locations.

When you create a new route assembly, you can select a non-default routing template from the Route Properties PropertyManager.
