Task Pane

The Task Pane appears when you open the SolidWorks software. It contains the following tabs:

SolidWorks Resources

Groups of commands for Getting Started, Community, and Online Resources, plus Tip of the Day.

Design Library

Reusable parts, assemblies, and other elements, including  Library Features.

File Explorer

Duplicate of Windows Explorer on your computer, plus Recent Documents and Open in SolidWorks. If SolidWorks Workgroup PDM is added in, the tab changes to .

Search

Results of search operations.

View Palette

Images of standard views, annotation views, section views, and flat patterns (sheet metal parts) to drag onto a drawing sheet.

Document Recovery

If auto-recovery is enabled in Tools, Options, System Options, Backup/Recover and the system terminates unexpectedly, recovered files appear on this tab the next time you start the application.

Appearances (/PhotoWorks)

Library of appearances and scenes. When PhotoWorks is added in, this tab includes PhotoWorks decals and lights.

Custom Properties

Enter custom properties in SolidWorks files.

The Task Pane can be in the following states:

  • Visible or hidden

  • Expanded or collapsed

  • Pinned or unpinned

  • Docked or floating

To show or hide the Task Pane:

  • Click View, Task Pane.

  • Right-click above or below the graphics area and select or clear Task Pane.

To expand the Task Pane:

Click one of the Task Pane tabs.

To collapse the Task Pane:

Click in the graphics area or FeatureManager.

The Task Pane does not collapse if it is pinned.

To pin or unpin the Task Pane:

  • Click in the title bar to pin the Task Pane.

  • Click to unpin the Task Pane.

If the Task Pane is unpinned, it collapses when you drag an item such as a document, a library feature, or an annotation into the graphics area, or when you open a new SolidWorks document.

To float or dock the Task Pane:

  • To float the Task Pane, drag it by the title bar into the graphics area.

  • To dock the Task Pane when it is floating, click in the title bar.

To resize the Task Pane:

Drag any edge that is not docked.
