Back Up the Vault

You can back up and restore the vault.

Always copy the complete vault, never make partial backups. When restoring a vault, always restore the complete vault. The vault contains SolidWorks Workgroup PDM configuration data in addition to project documents.
  • Back up the vault regularly.
  • Store the backup copy on a server different from the one where the vault resides.
  • Test the backup to be sure your procedure works correctly.
  • Stop the vault service, or lock the vault on the VaultAdmin Vault Settings tab, so clients cannot check in documents, change ownership, etc.
  • Clear the options on the VaultAdmin Vault Settings tab for validating the vault on startup, especially if the vault is large.

You can replace the current vault copy with a backup copy of the vault, if you want to revert to a previous version of the vault.

To make a backup copy of the vault:

  1. Stop the Workgroup PDM vault service.
  2. Stop the Windows Indexing service.

Stop the Vault Service

Before you perform maintenance on the vault, such as creating a backup copy of the vault, you must stop the vault service.

To stop the vault service:

  • In Windows, click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Right-click Workgroup PDM Server, and select Stop.
Start the vault service after you are finished with the maintenance.

Start the Vault Service

If you have stopped the vault service, you need to turn it back on so that the vault can process new information.

A large vault can take some time before it can be accessed after a system reboot or service restart. The initial startup may take longer than subsequent startups. Even though the SolidWorks Workgroup PDM Server service says it is started, it takes time for the vault data to rebuild into memory. A user cannot log in while the vault is rebuilding.

To start the vault service:

  • In Windows, click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Right-click Workgroup PDM Server, and select Start.

Start the Windows Indexing Service

After copying a SolidWorks Workgroup PDM vault for backup, you must restart the Windows Indexing service.

To start the Windows Indexing Service:

  1. Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
  2. In the Computer Management dialog box, in the left pane, right-click Indexing Service and select Start.

Stop the Windows Indexing Service

To make a copy of the Workgroup PDM vault for backup, you must stop the Windows Indexing service.

To stop the Windows Indexing Service:

  1. Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
  2. In the Computer Management dialog box, in the left pane, right-click Indexing Service and select Stop.
