Editing Splines

To edit splines:

  1. Select a spline or a spline point to edit any of the following:
    • Spline points: Select and drag a spline point to display the Point PropertyManager.

As you drag the spline point, the value for X Coordinate spline_x.png , Y Coordinate spline_y.png, and Z Coordinate spline_z.png(3D splines) changes.

    • Control polygon handles: Select and drag a control polygon handle spline_control_polygon_handle.gif to display the Spline Polygon PropertyManager.

As you drag a control polygon handle, the value for X Coordinate spline_x.png, Y Coordinate spline_y.png, and Z Coordinate spline_z.png (3D splines) changes.

    • Spline handles: In the Spline PropertyManager, under Parameters:
      1. Select Tangent Driving (or modify the tangent radial direction using the spline handles).
      2. Use any of the handles listed below to manipulate the spline point shown identified as Spline Point Number PM_Spline_Point_number.gif.

spline_handle_green-circle.gif Drag either circular handle to control both tangent weighting and direction (vector) asymmetrically.

Weighting modifies the spline's curvature to the left, right, or both left and right (when you press Alt) of the spline point.

Direction (vector) modifies the spline's angle of inclination relative to the X, Y, or Z (3D splines) axis.

        Under Parameters, updates values for:
        • Tangent Weighting 1 PM_Tangent_Magnitude_1.gifand Tangent Weighting 2 PM_Tangent_Magnitude_2.gif.
        • Tangent Radial Direction PM_Tangent_Radial_Direction.gif.
        • In 3D splines, this affects Tangent Polar Direction PM_Tangent_Polar_Direction.gif).
Press Alt and drag either circular handle to control both tangency weight and direction (vector) symmetrically.

Video: Controlling Tangent Weighting and Direction Symmetrically

Updates the same values as above to both sides of the spline point.

spline_handle_green-arrow.gif Drag either arrow head handle to control tangency weight asymmetrically.

        Under Parameters, updates values for:
        • Tangent Weighting 1 PM_Tangent_Magnitude_1.gif, and Tangent Weighting 2 PM_Tangent_Magnitude_2.gif.
        • In 3D splines, this affects Tangent Polar Direction PM_Tangent_Polar_Direction.gif.
Press Alt and drag either arrow head handle to control tangency weight symmetrically.

        Video: Controlling Tangent Weighting Symmetrically

Updates the same values as above to both sides of the spline point.

spline_handle_green-diamond.gif Drag either diamond handle to control tangency direction (vector). Tangency is applied symmetrically to the spline point.

        Video: Controlling Tangency Direction

Under Parameters, updates values for: Tangent Radial Direction PM_Tangent_Radial_Direction.gif.

Limitations exist with periodic splines. Some combinations of dimensions and constraints, such as Fix fixed.png Button and Horizontal horizontal.png Button, may prevent controlling tangent weighting asymmetrically.

  2. Examine the results, and if necessary, under Parameters:
    • Click Reset This Handle to return the spline handle to its original state.
    • Click Reset All Handles to return all spline handles to their original state.
    • Click Relax Spline to re-parameterize (smooth) the shape.

When you first sketch a spline and display the control polygon, you can drag any handle on the control polygon to change its shape.

If dragging results in a spline that is not smooth, re-select the spline to display the PropertyManager and click Relax Spline to re-parameterize the shape.

The Relax Spline command becomes available again by dragging a handle on the control polygon.

      Video: Relaxing Splines

    • Select Proportional to drag the spline without changing its shape.
  3. Click PM_OK.gif.
