Serial Numbers (For SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional only)

Use serial numbers to assign automatic names to files and folders, to assign unique IDs to items, or to add unique running values to card controls. You can set up any number of serial numbers in each vault.

You define serial numbers in the Serial Number dialog box. To display it, you must have a local view of the vault for which you are defining the serial number.
  • To create a new serial number, right-click Serial Numbers and select New Serial Number.
  • To edit an existing serial number, expand Serial Numbers and double-click the serial number.
You can generate a serial number:
  • From a string

The serial number is made up of a combination of static text and a running automated value.

  • From a list
  • From an add-in

The serial number is retrieved from a serial number add-in, created in VB or C++ using the SOLIDWORKS PDM API. You might use this option when the serial number should be retrieved from an external system such as an ERP.

The Item Number serial number is defined by default to generate unique item IDs. See Items.
