Data Card Variables

Most controls on data cards display existing values and allow input of new values. These values are stored in the vault database in data card variables. The variable used for each control is defined in the control properties.

Variables can be linked to properties (metadata) stored in files in the vault so that the file values always match the values stored in the database. Updating the file properties updates the linked variable values and updating the data card updates the linked file properties.

The name of an assigned variable appears in the control when the card is open in the Card Editor.

For example, when a Word document is added to the vault, the SOLIDWORKS PDM software reads the file's properties and updates the card variables that are linked to each property on the .doc or .docx file data card.
