Mesh Failure Diagnostics

When meshing fails, the software gives a message and stops unless automatic trials is active. A mesh failure diagnostics tool is provided to help you locate and resolve solid meshing problems.

To access the Mesh Failure Diagnostics tool, right-click Mesh and click Failure Diagnostics.

The meshing of a solid component consists of two basic phases. In the first phase, the mesher places nodes on the boundary. This phase is called surface meshing. If the first phase is successful, the mesher starts the second phase where it creates nodes in the inside, fills the volume with tetrahedral elements, and places mid-side nodes. Mid-side nodes are placed only if high mesh quality is requested in the Meshing Options dialog box. Failure can occur during one of the two phases.

The Mesh Failure Diagnostics pane lists and highlights the components that failed. For each component, it lists and highlights the faces and edges that caused the failure. You can double-click a body listed in the Mesh Failure Diagnostics pane to zoom-in the body in the graphics area.

  • Click Show bodies which failed to mesh to render these bodies in shaded display mode in the graphics area. Meshed bodies are rendered in wireframe display mode.
  • Click Show mesh for all bodies to view the meshed bodies only.
Click Tools > Evaluate > Check to check the model for invalid geometry.

Identifying Failing Components

To identify failing components:

  1. After meshing has failed, right-click the Mesh icon and select Failure Diagnostics.
  2. To identify the problem with a component, select it in the list box.
All faces and edges of the selected component that caused the meshing to fail highlight in the graphics area.
  3. To identify a failing face or edge, select it in the list box.
Selected face or edge highlights in the graphics area.
The Failure Diagnostics PropertyManager is available for solid mesh only.

You can mesh the failed components only without having to remesh the bodies that mesh successfully.
