Scenes

A scene is a set of 3D objects, including the models, lights, and camera used when rendering.

In SOLIDWORKS Visualize, you use High Dynamic Range Images (HDRIs) as the light source in projects. The software maps an HDRI onto a spherical environment that envelops models like a bubble. The HDRI radiates light into the scene according to the RGB values of each pixel in the image. This technique simulates real-world lighting even when you need wide contrast ranges.

The HDRI is mapped onto a sphere with a radius of 25 meters centered at the world origin. You can rotate, scale, and offset the environmental sphere relative to the world origin.

An HDRI is a 2D image stored in a file format with a greater range of luminance values than a standard bitmap image. HDRIs are often used as environment maps in image-based lighting techniques to create subtle, real-world lighting effects. Image-based lighting is a technique in which a photographic reference image is used as an environment map to control the surface illumination of a 3D object to create subtle real-world lighting effects.

  • Loading HDR Environment Images

    Loading a new HDR image into an environment replaces an old HDR image. After loading, you see the lighting in the scene change to use the light from the new HDR image.

  • Environmental Brightness and Gamma

    You can adjust the brightness and gamma of the light emitted by the environment image in a project.

    The Scenes tab in the Palette includes parameters which appear when you select an environment in the tab.

    You can create or edit an HDRI in HDR Light Studio. Edits you make in HDR Light Studio update the lighting in SOLIDWORKS Visualize in real time.

  • HDR Light Studio Parameters

    If you installed HDR Light Studio, you can create or edit an HDRI in HDR Light Studio. Edits you make in HDR Light Studio update the lighting in SOLIDWORKS Visualize Professional in real time.

  • Lights

    You can supplement the HDR lighting in a scene by creating and tuning individual lights.

  • Backplate Images

    A backplate lets you load a high resolution 2D image in the background of a project. Once loaded, the backplate image remains in the background no matter where you move the camera.

  • Sunlight Environments

    SOLIDWORKS Visualize can simulate the lighting at a specific location and time of day on earth. The resulting sunlight environment is different than an HDR image, although both radiate full HDR light.
