Bills of Materials

A bill of materials (BOM) is a tabular listing of the components of a SOLIDWORKS PDM item or a SOLIDWORKS assembly, drawing, or weldment part.

Item Explorer displays item BOMs and item named BOMs in the Bill of Materials tab. To view other BOM types, use File Explorer.

When you generate items, it is possible to attach multiple configurations of a part to the same item. This can cause the BOM structure in Item Explorer to display differently from the BOM structure in File Explorer. To make the BOM structure in Item Explorer mirror the BOM structure in File Explorer, when you generate items, give each configuration of the part a separate item ID.

  • Item BOMs

    Item BOMs are computed BOMs that shows item structure.

  • Named BOMs

    You can save computed BOMs, including item BOMs and SOLIDWORKS BOMs, as named BOMs. Create named BOMs to take a snapshot of the BOM for an assembly, drawing, or item.

  • Comparing BOMs

    You can compare any of the BOMs listed on the Bill of Materials tab, or you can compare different versions of the same BOM. After comparing two BOMs, you can open the BOM comparison data as a .csv file.

  • Searching Item BOMs

    You can search for text in an item BOM.

  • Opening Item BOMs in Excel

    You can open an item BOM in Microsoft Excel.

  • Sorting BOMs

    You can sort the contents of any type of BOM by any column.
