Overview of eDrawings

You use eDrawings® to create, view, and share 3D models and 2D drawings.

Creating eDrawings Files

With eDrawings and various CAD software programs, you can create the following types of eDrawings files:
  • 3D part files (*.eprt)
  • 3D assembly files (*.easm)
  • 2D drawing files (*.edrw)

With eDrawings Professional, you can also create eDrawings markup files (*.markup) that have markups, such as text comments and geometric elements. See also Review/Measure-Enabled Files for information about creating and viewing eDrawings files.

Viewing Files

You can view eDrawings and other file types with the eDrawings Viewer. The eDrawings Viewer supports the SpaceBall® and SpaceMouse® space devices, using the 3DxWare device driver, version 2.0 and above, available from www.3Dconnexion.com. You can use these space devices to manipulate the model in the eDrawings Viewer as if you held the model in your hand.

Sharing eDrawings Files

To share eDrawings files, email:
  • The eDrawings file. Recipients who have the eDrawings Viewer can open the attached eDrawings file.
  • A Zip file.
  • An HTML file.
  • An executable file.

As a best practice, distribute drawings and assemblies files in eDrawings format, which always requires updates when referenced parts are modified. If this is not possible, redistribute the updated SOLIDWORKS parent drawings and assemblies each time you modify the referenced parts.
