The options with asterisks * in the table can significantly improve performance when previewing files with references, such as drawings and assemblies. Some preview applications can load the drawing or assembly without requiring that all referenced files are local.

When not selected, any noncached references (or older versions when working with latest version option) are downloaded so that the preview can load the entire reference tree.

Do not allow duplicate file names for this file extension Enables duplicate file name checking for this file type. See Preventing Duplicate File Names in the Vault.
Open file command does not need referenced files * When a user opens a file of this type, do not download (cache) the referenced files.
Preview does not need referenced files * When a user previews a file of this type, do not download (cache) referenced files.
Support Item generation ( SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional only) Allows items to be created from files of this type using the File Explorer Generate Item command or the Item Explorer New Item From File command. See Items.

By default, this option is enabled only for CAD part and assembly file types. These types define product structure for which SOLIDWORKS PDM can automatically generate item structure. You can enable item generation for other file types, but it is more typical to link existing items to non-CAD files than to generate items directly from them.

This option is not enabled for CAD drawings by default. SOLIDWORKS PDM statically links drawings to the corresponding part or assembly item. Selecting this option enables the Generate Item command for drawings, but the behavior does not change; separate items are not generated for drawings.

View file command does not need referenced files * When a user views a file of this type, do not download (cache) the referenced files.
The file type can have drawing nodes with the following extensions Allows showing the listed extension as a drawing node (that is drawing subparent) in reference dialogs for files that have the drawing registered as a parent reference.

Type extensions without periods (.), and separated by commas (,).
