Creating a Template

You can create your own templates to use as the basis for new part, drawing, and assembly documents.

In your template, you can customize document properties such as units of measure and dimensioning standards. You can include items such as sketches, notes, and features in the graphics area.

To create a template:

  1. Click New (Standard toolbar) or File > New.
  2. Double-click the type of template that you want to create: Part, Assembly, or Drawing.
  3. Click Options (Standard toolbar) or Tools > Options.
  4. On the Document Properties tab, select options to customize your new document template, then click OK.
    Only options on the Document Properties tab are saved in a document template.
  5. Optional. In the graphics area, add items such as sketches, notes, and features.
  6. Click File > Save As.
  7. Select a template type for Save as type:
    • Part Templates (*.prtdot)
    • Assembly Templates (*.asmdot)
    • Drawing Templates (*.drwdot)
    The destination path automatically changes to the default template folder when you select a template type for Save as type.
  8. Type a name for File name.
  9. Optional. Browse to another folder.
  10. Click Save.
