Rigid Groups

You can reduce the Motion Analysis simulation time by selecting components and grouping them into a rigid group.

Rigid groups of components behave like a single component in motion calculations:
  • Motion between components in the group is ignored.
  • Mates between components in the group are ignored.
  • All group components contribute to the mass and moment of inertia of the rigid group.
You can drag components, folders, or subassemblies into and out of rigid groups.
You cannot drag individual components of a rigid subassembly into a rigid group.
If a rigid group contains one fixed component, the rigid group is considered fixed for motion calculations.
When you add components containing mates to a rigid groups, the mates are listed in the MotionManager design tree under the rigid group.

Adding Folder Contents to a New Rigid Group

To add the contents of a folder in the FeatureManager design tree to a new rigid group:

Right-click the folder and click Move Contents to New Rigid Group.
Organizing components in folders prior to creating rigid groups helps manage the rigid groups. When you delete a rigid group containing a folder, the contents of the rigid group return to the folder.

Adding Components to a New Rigid Group

To add a component or subassembly to a rigid group:

Right-click the component or subassembly in the MotionManager tree, and click Add to New Rigid Group.
To add components from a rigid subassembly to a new rigid group you must add the subassembly to the new rigid group.

Adding Components to Existing Rigid Groups

To add components or subassemblies to an existing rigid group:

Drag the components or subassemblies to the rigid group or to any component of the rigid group.
To add components from a rigid subassembly to an existing rigid group, you must drag the rigid subassembly to the group.

Removing Components from Rigid Groups

When you remove components from a rigid group, the components return to their original location in the MotionManager tree.

To remove components from a rigid group:

Drag components or subassemblies:
  • To their original location in the MotionManager tree
  • To the mates node or to any top-level motion element of the MotionManager tree
  • To the top-level assembly or to a top-level component or subassembly of the MotionManager tree
You can drag components from flexible subassemblies only to the original flexible subassembly or to the top-level assembly.
You can remove all components from a rigid group without deleting the group from the MotionManager tree.

Deleting Rigid Groups

To delete a rigid group:

Right-click the rigid group and click Delete.
When you delete a rigid group, the group components return to their original location in the MotionManager tree.
