Cool Settings PropertyManager

The Cool analysis module uses the cool settings parameters. The Cool analysis module performs heat transfer analysis that predicts the distribution of temperature within the mold, taking into account the mold cooling system. Temperature results from Cool analysis are used in subsequent Flow and Pack analysis modules.

To open the Cool Settings PropertyManager:

  • In the PlasticsManager, expand Process Parameters, and doube-click Cool Settings.

Process Parameters

Melt Temperature Temperature of the polymer at the injection location (or locations).

The default value for Melt Temperature is taken from the material database (see Polymer-Material Parameters tab of the selected material data sheet).

If you modify the value of Melt Temperature in this field, the modified value is copied to the Melt Temperature field of the Fill Settings PropertyManager.
Air Temperature Temperature of the air surrounding the exterior of the mold.
Min. Coolant Temperature The lowest allowable value for coolant temperature at any point during the injection molding cycle.
The Coolant Input boundary conditions override this default inlet temperature condition.
Average Coolant Flow Rate The average flow rate of coolant through the mold’s cooling system.
The Coolant Input boundary conditions override the average flow rate of coolant.
  Mold Open Time

The software uses this quanitity to compute the Total Cycle Time as follows:

Total Cycle Time = Cooling Time (Cool Settings PropertyManager) + Mold Open Time.

This is equivalent to:

Total Cycle Time = Filling Time (Fill Settings PropertyManager) + Pressure Holding Time (Pack Settings PropertyManager) + Pure Cooling Time (Pack Settings PropertyManager) + Mold Open Time.

Reactive Control Type

Available only when you select a thermoset polymer material. Examples of thermoset material families available in the Plastics database include: BMC, EMC, and LSR.

Conversion

Thermoset materials change their chemical constitution because of the increased reactivity in the high temperatures of the mold. This parameter controls the degree of conversion. The Fill/Pack stage lasts until the analysis reaches the specified value for the Reactive Eject Conversion: (%).

Time Specifies the length of time for the Fill/Pack phase.
Reactive Eject Conversion: (%) Specifies the required conversion degree. Available when you select Conversion.

Specify Control Parameters

These options determine the end of Cool analysis.

  Cooling Time

The total time (in sec) the Cool simulation solver uses to calculate the temperature reduction of the polymer material inside the mold cavity. The program calculates the cooling time as follows:

Cooling Time = Filling Time (Fill Settings PropertyManager) + Pressure Holding Time (Pack Settings PropertyManager) + Pure Cooling Time (Pack Settings PropertyManager)

To modify the Cooling Time without affecting the other preprocess settings, from the Pack Settings PropertyManager, select Pure Cooling Time, and enter the value.

Eject Temperature Cool analysis is finished when 90% of the cavity volume falls below the material’s ejection temperature.
Flow Rate / Coolant Temperature Profile Allows optional specification of variation in flow rate and coolant temperature during the cooling cycle. Coolant Input boundary conditions override this data.

This options is available with Specify control based on Cooling Time.

Reset All Resets the settings back to their default values.

Solver Settings

Options Provides access to the advanced solver settings. Accept the default values of the solver settings to produce the best results over a wide range of cases. For most analyses, you do not need to modify the solver settings.

See topic Advanced Settings for Cool Solver.
