Saving Files as STL Files

You can save part and assembly files as STL files using binary or ASCII format. Binary files are smaller than ASCII files, but they are not supported in some other systems.

If cross sections are shown in the model, they are not shown in the STL file.

The STL file always uses meters for the unit of measure. All measurements from the original file are converted into the equivalent value in meters in the STL file.

To save a file that you received from another user as an STL file, the sender must have set the option to give you permission. See Creating SolidWorks eDrawings Files.

To save files as STL files:

  1. Click File, Save As.

  2. Set Save as type to STL Files (*.stl).

  3. Type the File name, then click Save.

  4. In the STL Export Options dialog box, under Format, select Binary or ASCII.

  5. Click OK.
