ProStep EDMD Files

ProStep EDMD (*.idx) files are supported by major ECAD vendors. Use this file format to collaborate with your ECAD designers on an ECAD design. You can export CircuitWorks™ data to ProStep EDMD files and you can import ProStep EDMD files into CircuitWorks. CircuitWorks communicates proposed changes to the ECAD files to the ECAD designer and updated changes to ProStep EDMD files are communicated back to CircuitWorks when you import the ECAD data.

There are three typical workflows for SolidWorks designers using ProStep EDMD files:
  • Sending ProStep EDMD file information for a new board to an ECAD designer:
    1. Designing a new board in SolidWorks and exporting it to CircuitWorks or opening an existing ECAD file in CircuitWorks
    2. Converting the ECAD file to ProStep EDMD
    3. Sending the ECAD file to your ECAD designer, either by syncing with a shared folder or by sending the files by email
  • Sending proposed changes to a board from a ProStep EDMD file to an ECAD designer:
    1. Modifying a board in SolidWorks and exporting it to CircuitWorks
    2. Sending the proposed changes to the ProStep EDMD file to your ECAD designer, either by syncing with a shared folder or by sending the files by email
  • Importing ProStep EDMD file that has changes proposed by an ECAD designer, approving or rejecting those changes, and sending decisions back to the ECAD designer:
    1. Opening the ProStep EDMD file in CircuitWorks
    2. Accepting or rejecting the proposed changes
    3. Building the model in SolidWorks
    4. Making proposed model changes in SolidWorks
    5. Exporting the model to CircuitWorks
    6. Sending the review results and any new proposed model changes to your ECAD designer, either by syncing with a shared folder or by sending the files by email

These workflows are integrated with the options you set in CircuitWorks Options > ProStep/EDMD.

Each time you sync your ProStep EDMD data with your ECAD designer you are prompted to add messages that explain your decisions and proposed changes.
  • Enabling ProStep EDMD Syncing
    You must enable ProStep EDMD file syncing to work with ProStep EDMD data in the CircuitWorks application.
  • Specifying the Shared ProStep EDMD Data Folder
    You must specify a shared folder to share ProStep EDMD data with an ECAD designer. If you do not use email-based communication, the shared folder location must be available to you from the SolidWorks software and to the ECAD designer from the ECAD application. If you use email-based communication, the shared folder is the location where you store your updated ProStep EDMD files before importing to or exporting from the CircuitWorks application.
  • Converting ECAD Files to ProStep EDMD
    You can convert any type of supported ECAD file to a ProStep EDMD Baseline file.
  • Sending ProStep EDMD Updates Manually
    If you have cleared the Sync with ECAD automatically on build CircuitWorks option, you can manually send change decisions to your ECAD designer.
  • Sending New ProStep EDMD Data to ECAD Designers
    With ProStep EDMD enabled, you can send new ProStep EDMD data to ECAD designers after exporting a SolidWorks model to CircuitWorks, or after saving ECAD data to ProStep EDMD .
  • Importing ProStep EDMD Files
    You can import ProStep EDMD files into CircuitWorks.
  • Reviewing and Sending ProStep EDMD Model Changes
    After an ECAD designer proposes changes to a shared ProStep EDMD file, you can accept or reject the changes in CircuitWorks before building the model with the SolidWorks software. You can then propose your own model changes, and send these proposed changes to the ECAD designer, along with your decisions about the changes proposed by the ECAD designer.
  • EDMD Tab
    From the EDMD tab of the CircuitWorks application, you can send ProStep EDMD file change decisions and review correspondence.
  • CircuitWorks Changes Tree - Symbols and Labels
    When you open ProStep EDMD files that contain proposed changes, the changes appear in the Changes tree located below the standard CircuitWorks tree view.
