Mass Properties and Section Properties

The SolidWorks application calculates properties such as mass, density, and volume, based on the model geometry and material properties. You can override the calculated values for some properties.

You can view the mass properties for:
  • A part
  • Bodies within a multibody part
  • An assembly
  • Components within an assembly
In a part or assembly, you can view section properties of faces and sketches.

You can assign values for mass, center of mass, and moments of inertia to override the calculated values. This is useful when you create a simplified representation of a component, and want to assign the correct mass properties to the model.
