Toolbox Dialog Box

Use the Toolbox dialog box to configure the Toolbox integration.

To display this dialog box:

Double-click Toolbox.

Manage SOLIDWORKS Toolbox in the vault
  • Select this option when the entire Toolbox folder is located in an Enterprise PDM vault.

    Specify the location of the folder in the vault as the Toolbox root folder path.

    When users access Toolbox, Enterprise PDM automatically performs all data management operations, such as checking in and checking out parts.

    This option requires SOLIDWORKS 2010 or later.
    If you manage Toolbox completely in the vault, when you open files in Solidworks or check files in from SOLIDWORKS or File Explorer, Enterprise PDM searches the vault to resolve Toolbox references.
  • Clear this option to use partial Toolbox integration, where the Toolbox root folder is located outside of the Enterprise PDM vault and a second folder in the vault is used to store new configurations of parts.

    Specify the location of the second folder as the Toolbox root folder path.

    When users create new configurations or parts, Enterprise PDM automatically creates new file versions in this folder.
When accessing Toolbox, use permissions from (Available when Manage SOLIDWORKS Toolbox in the vault is selected.) Specifies the Enterprise PDM user whose permissions are used when users access Toolbox through the SOLIDWORKS Design Library task pane.

The user selected must have read/write permission to the Toolbox vault folder. All other users can have read-only permission. Users with read-only permission can still use Toolbox because Enterprise PDM applies the permissions of the selected user, regardless of who is actually initiating the Toolbox action.

To ensure that others are not blocked from making changes, set permissions so that users cannot check out Toolbox parts manually using Enterprise PDM. Instead, let the Toolbox/Enterprise PDM integration manage files automatically.
These permissions apply only to the use of the Toolbox task pane functionality. Users who configure Toolbox in SOLIDWORKS must have individual user permissions for the Toolbox folder that allow them to read, check out, and add files, as described below.

Choose one:

Toolbox User

To simplify access management, select an Enterprise PDM user with read/write permissions to the Toolbox vault folder and grant all other users read-only access to the folder. You can select the Enterprise PDM Admin user or create a user specific to Toolbox.

When the Toolbox library is used, instead of using the permissions of the user who is accessing the library, Enterprise PDM uses the permissions of the user selected here; however, the part's history shows the user who performed the operation.

<Logged in User>

To control access to Toolbox for each user individually, select <Logged in User> and set Enterprise PDM permissions on the Toolbox folder for each user. When users first access Toolbox during a SOLIDWORKS session, they are prompted for their Enterprise PDM user names and passwords.

For example, to implement a librarian-managed Toolbox, where only designated users can create new configurations or parts, select <Logged in User>, grant librarians read/write permissions, and grant all other users read-only permissions.
The following Enterprise PDM state and folder permissions are required to access and configure Toolbox:
  • For read/write access and Toolbox configuration:
    • Add or rename file
    • Check out file
    • Read file contents
    • Show working versions of files
  • For read-only access:
    • Read file contents
    • Show working versions of files
Toolbox root folder path Specifies the Enterprise PDM vault folder where the SOLIDWORKS Toolbox library is managed. This is the folder containing the Toolbox Browser and lang folders (SOLIDWORKS Data by default).

If blank, there is no interaction between Toolbox and Enterprise PDM.

If Manage SOLIDWORKS Toolbox in the vault is selected:
  • You must check in Toolbox before setting this option. Enterprise PDM validates the path by searching for the Toolbox database (lang\<lang>\SWBrowser.mdb).
  • Users must specify this vault folder path in the SOLIDWORKS System Options - Hole Wizard/Toolbox dialog box.

If Manage SOLIDWORKS Toolbox in the vault is cleared, this path points to the location in the vault where new configurations of Toolbox parts are saved.

This is the method used for Toolbox integration prior to the 2010 release.

To specify the Toolbox root folder location, which is outside the vault, in SOLIDWORKS, click Tools > Options > Hole Wizard/Toolbox and type or browse to the location.
Search subfolders for Toolbox parts on assembly check-in When assemblies are checked in from File Explorer, recursively scans folders under the Toolbox vault root folder for parts. This option is recommended, particularly for Toolbox migration.
This option does not apply to the SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM add-in because reference issues must be resolved when you open the assembly in SOLIDWORKS.
