New File Dialog Box

Use the New File dialog box to define a file to be created by the template.

To display this dialog box:

From the Files and Folders screen of the template wizard, click , then select a template file.

Template source file

To select a source file, click Browse, select a source file, then click Open.

File name
Type the name of the new file created by the template. To include template variables in the file name, click and select Organize Variables.
Ensure that you specify a file extension, generally the same as the source file. You can specify a different extension, such as .doc even though the source file is .dot.
Show file data card when file is created

A file data card dialog box is displayed when the user runs the template. The user can then change the file's name and variable values. The file can be opened or created from the card dialog. Select the Default card page.

Expand variables in the file too

Enterprise PDM scans the file when it is created by the template and replaces all recognized variables (%variable_name%) with the corresponding values.

For example, if you have an author variable associated with the logged-in user's name and the source file contains the following line:
   Author of this file: %author%
then the new line will be:
   Author of this file: Smith
if the logged-in user is Smith.
Use this option with ASCII files only. Variable replacement does not work with most binary files because they might contain hard-coded offsets and checksums.
Share the file from the source instead of copying it

The source file is shared instead of copied. Changes made to a shared file are reflected in all locations in the vault that reference the file.

Disable standard serial number generation

Select this option if the file data card of the created file has a serial number as the default value and you want to assign that same serial number using a template variable. If you do not select this option, the serial number is generated both for the default value and for the template value (the numbers will skip).

Check in the file using the following comment

Type a check-in comment for the file. The file is automatically checked in when the user runs the template. The default comment is Checked in by the template manager.

Copy these variables to the file data card

Select template variable values you want automatically written to file data card variables of the new file. For example, you could copy the value of the template variable Document ID to the file data card Dest. doc. ID.
