Importing Active Directory Users into Groups (For SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional only)

When the SOLIDWORKS PDM Archive Server login type is Windows login, you can create groups by importing them from Active Directory. This lets you set up your SOLIDWORKS PDM environment to match the environment of your organization.

The import wizard imports complete user names and email addresses. An update option lets you keep SOLIDWORKS PDM synchronized with Active Directory.

If you use the Administration tool on a computer other than the computer the archive server is running on, the computer running the archive server must be "Trusted" by the domain server on which Active Directory is running. See Configuring the Active Directory Domain Controller.

To import Active Directory users into a group:

  1. Right-click Groups and click Import from Active Directory.
  2. In the Import Groups from Active Directory dialog box, do one of the following:
    • To list all Active Directory groups, select Find all Active Directory Groups and click Find.
The scope of the search is limited to the current forest (Active Directory security boundary).
    • To find a specific group, select Find the following group, type the name of the group, and click Find.
You can use * as a wildcard in the search.
Groups that are returned by the search are listed, along with their domains.
  3. Select one or more groups to import and click Next.
  4. In the Group Members list, select the users to add to the group and clear users you do not want to add.
  5. Optionally, for Copy permissions and settings from select a user whose settings will apply to all users in the group.
  6. Click Next.
The Properties dialog box for the new group opens. The Group name defaults to the name Active Directory group name.
  7. Use the Properties dialog box to set the permissions for group members.
  8. Click OK.
