Cool Pipe PropertyManager

The Cool Pipe PropertyManager sets the parameters of the cooling channels created from a sketch using the Solid Mesh Procedure > Runner and Cooling System Design.

To open the Cool Pipe PropertyManager:

  • In the Plastics manager, expand Boundary Conditions, and double-click Cool Pipe.
With this boundary condition you can define one inlet and one outlet for each cooling circuit. All other side passages are treated as dead ends.
  • By creating a sketch to define the cooling channel layout, and entering channel diameters using the Channel Design PropertyManager, you get more accurate COOL analysis results (such as part cooling time, and part and mold temperatures at end of cooling).
  • If your cooling system is created from solid geometry, use the Coolant Entrance boundary condition instead of Cool Pipe.

Coolant velocity that is high enough to create turbulent flow is essential to create maximum heat transfer from the mold into the coolant. The heat transfer coefficient used with Cool Pipe depends on velocity through the Reynolds number, so it is sensitive to Laminar and Turbulent flow conditions.

A warning message will appear in the log and Report text file, if the coolant flow rate is insufficient to maintain turbulent conditions, for example:

** Warning D3001 ** Channel elm. # 1 Reynolds Number=1.0e+002 is less than 4000.

Selections

Lists all cooling channels you previously defined using the Channel Design PropertyManager. To edit the parameters of a cooling channel, select it in the table.

Inlet Outlet Opening (Elements) Lists the inlet (blue arrow) and outlet elements (red arrow) of the cooling channel.
Reverse Flow Reverses the coolant flow direction.
Coolant Material Select a coolant material from the material database.
Inlet Temperature Sets the temperature of the coolant material at the inlet.

This temperature value overrides the default Min Coolant Temperature in the Cool Settings PropertyManager.

Flow Parameters Sets the flow control rate of the cooling material within the cooling channel. Select one of the flow parameters input:
  • Flow rate (cc/sec)
  • Total Pressure Drop (MPa)
Apply Applies the current settings to the cooling channel.
