Surface Finish Symbols Dialog Box

Use the Surface Finish Symbol dialog box to configure the surface finish symbols from the drawings.

The dialog box contains the following tabs:

You can configure requirements for surface finish to meet specifications and use of surface finish symbols on technical drawings.

As you configure the properties, the surface finish symbol on the drawing area changes in real time.

Symbol Tab

Lets you configure the surface texture requirements to display in a surface finish symbol.

The set of available options varies according to the drafting standard.

Options

Lets you specify the symbol type.

Option Description
Basic symbol Adds a basic surface finish symbol.
Material removal required Indicates that material removal is required.
Material removal prohibited Indicates that material removal is prohibited.
Force tail When enabled, creates a tail for a symbol without text. This option is available only for symbols that have the allaround symbol.

Note: The All around option is available for ISO standard and other drafting standards that allow surface indicator leaders.

Place as majority symbol Sets the symbol to be a collective indication of all other surface texture symbols in the drawing. This option is available only if you created the symbol without a leader.

Requirements

This part of the dialog box pictorially displays options for specifying different surface finish parameters. Editing fields location in relation with the symbol shows the proper location for each parameter.

It is possible to place additional information around the root symbol, which varies according to the drafting standard.

When you move the mouse cursor over an editing field, a tooltip describes what information should you specify in that field.

Insert symbol

Lets you insert a special character from the list in any of the editing fields, at the current cursor position.

C parameter specifies the machining method.

  • C Process note 1. Specifies the process requirements for the surface.
  • C' Process note 2. Specifies the process requirements for the surface.

A parameter specifies passband or sampling length and surface texture parameter symbol and value. The options in the drop-down lists differ. You can add new options, modify or remove existing one. See Settings.

  • A First requirement. Specifies the first requirement for the surface.
  • A' Second requirement. Specifies the second requirement for the surface.

B Third requirement. Specifies the third and subsequent parameters when multiple parameters are required.

D parameter indicates the primary direction of the surface pattern.

Option Description
Parallel Indicates that the surface pattern is parallel to the line that represents the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Perpendicular Indicates that the surface pattern is perpendicular to the line that represents the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Angular Indicates that the surface pattern is angular in both directions to the line that represents the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Multidirectional Multidirectional or random pattern.
Circular Indicates that the surface pattern is approximately circular relative to the center of the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Radial Approximately radial relative to the center of the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Place as majority symbol Indicates that the surface pattern is particulate, nondirectional, or protuberant.
No Lay Symbol
All around

Note: This option is available for ISO standard and other drafting standards that allow surface indicator leaders.

Adds the allaround sign to the symbol.

E Machine allowance. Indicates a minimum material removal requirement in millimeters. Sets the amount of material removed.

Clear

Clears all the data and restores the default values.

Settings

Displays the Surface Texture Settings dialog box where you can configure the leader display and the text format.

Leader and Text Tab

Groups the options for configuring leaders and surface extension line.

Leader

Arrowhead Specifies the arrowhead to use at the end of the leader line attached to the surface finish symbol. The drop-down lists arrowheads conforms to the current drafting standard. Specifying By Standard, lets you use the arrowhead from the current drafting standard. When you change the arrowhead specified for the current drafting standard in the Standard Settings dialog box, the arrowhead of the symbol updates automatically.
Edit leader segments Groups options for adding and removing leaders, leader segments, and leader nodes.
  • Add. Lets you add leaders, leader segments, and leader nodes to the surface symbol.
  • Remove. Removes a leader or a leader segment.
Edit entity attachment Lets you attach or detach the surface finish symbol to an entity.

Surface extension line

Offset from entity Specifies the distance between the extension line start point and the attached entity.
Extension beyond leader Specifies the distance between the leader start point and the extension line end point.

Text

Automatically adjust symbol position on leader Moves the symbol to the default position on the leader.

Settings

Displays the Surface Texture Settings dialog box where you can configure the leader display and the text format.
