Edge Weld Definitions

This topic defines some of the terms associated with the Edge Weld connector.

Fillet Weld

A triangular weld that joins two metal parts at a right angle.

All fillet welds defined in the Edge Weld PropertyManager have a 450 configuration.

Groove Weld

A weld applied in a preformed opening or groove between two metal parts.

Groove welds defined in the Edge Weld PropertyManager can represent all edge-to-edge weld types (square butt, V, J, and U conditions).

Local Weld Joint Coordinate System

Edge weld results are calculated for all mesh nodes on the intersecting edge of the terminated part. Results are calculated with respect to a local coordinate system established at each node as shown in the figure.

  • Surface Normal, Us: Axis is normal to the top surface of the shell of the terminated part .
  • Weld Joint Normal, Uj: Axis is normal to the intersecting shell edge of the terminated part and oriented away from the part.
  • Weld Axis, Uw: Axis runs parallel to the direction of the weld seam. Its direction is defined by Uw = Us x Uj.

Weld Size

The dimension of the joint penetration of a groove weld (s). The distance from the root to the toe of a fillet weld (weld leg).

Weld Throat

The minimum distance from the root of the weld to the face of the weld (t).

Groove Weld Representation Fillet Weld Representation

Joint Normal Force

A component of the weld force (Tj) acting normal to the intersecting shell edge of the terminated part along the weld joint normal axis, Uj. Units given in force / unit weld length.

Shear Weld Axis Force

A component of the weld force (Tw) acting parallel to the weld seam along the local weld axis, Uw. Units given in force / unit weld length.

Shear Surface Normal Force

A component of the weld force (Ts) acting along the local surface normal axis, Us. Units given in force / unit weld length.

Bending Moment

A moment (Mw) acting about the local weld axis, Uw. Units given in moment / unit weld length.
