Generate Derived Output

Using the Design with SOLIDWORKS app or SOLIDWORKS Connected, you can schedule a task that generates derived output as .DXF, .DWG, or .PDF files from SOLIDWORKS drawings or STEP files. The software uploads the output to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Creating a Generate Derived Output Task

To create a generate derived output task

:
  1. Click Generate Derived Output on the sidebar, or click Tasks > Generate Derived Output.
  2. In the Task title dialog box, enter a title for the task.
  3. Specify the Derived Output:
    • DWG file
    • DXF file
    • PDF
    • STEP AP203
    • STEP AP214
You can have the task include STEP AP203 or AP214 derived objects attached to SOLIDWORKS assemblies. The STEP format is not available for the Design with SOLIDWORKS app in on-premise installations. AP203 defines the geometry, topology, and configuration management data of solid models for mechanical parts and assemblies. This file type does not manage colors and layers. AP214 has everything that an AP203 file includes, but adds colors, layers, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and design intent
  4. Select a Collaborative Space.
  5. Specify the Maturity.
  6. For Owner, specify an option from the collaborative space.
  7. For Password, enter your 3DEXPERIENCE platform password.

Accessing a Generate Derived Output Task

For the task to appear in SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler, you must install the Design with SOLIDWORKS app or SOLIDWORKS Connected.

To access a Generate Derived Output task

:

In SOLIDWORKS, click Tools > SOLIDWORKS Applications > SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler.

Scheduling the Task

The generate derived output task requires that you enter your 3DEXPERIENCE platform password when creating the task. This allows the task to run SOLIDWORKS on your behalf at a future date and time. For example, you can specify a task to run nightly and automatically generate derived outputs for assemblies or drawings added each day that match your search.
The same options available in the Export Task are available for the Generate Derived Outputs task. For more information, see the following topics: DXF/DWG OptionsSetting DXF/DWG File Export Options, STEP OptionsSetting STEP Export Options, and PDF OptionsSetting PDF Export Options.

To schedule the task:

  1. Under Task Schedule, specify:
    Option Description
Running mode Specifies how often the task runs. Select Once, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.
    Start time
    Start date
  2. Click Options to specify export options.
  3. Click Advanced if you want to change task options such as backup file location and time-out duration.
  4. Click Finish.
The task and its title, scheduled time, scheduled date, and status appear in the Tasks panel. The status of the task is Scheduled.
To run a scheduled task, your computer must be on at the scheduled start time. The SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler window does not need to be open. If your computer is off at the scheduled start time, the task runs when you turn your computer on.

At the scheduled start time, the task is initiated. If the task acts on more than one file, a subtask is generated for each file. If you selected Backup task files in Task Options, a backup copy of each file is saved to a .zip file. Then each file is exported. When the task completes, the status changes to Completed.

After the task completes, click Completed to see the SOLIDWORKS Task Scheduler Report.
If your backup files include Unicode file paths, use a zip file extraction application that supports UTF-8 encoding.
