Torsion of a Square Box Beam

Description

Find the shear stress and the angle of twist for the square box beam shown in the figure. The free end is subjected to a 300 lb-in torque. The beam has a length of 1500". The beam cross section is a square with a side length of 150".

Results

Theory SOLIDWORKS Simulation
Shear stress (τ xz), psi 0.0021365 0.002132
Rotation (θ), radians 0.01541 0.01536
Shear stress is reported for a point on XZ plane sufficiently far away from free end and the edges of box beam. The angle of rotation θ is calculated as: θ = Sin-1(resultant displacement of a vertex on the free cross section/distance from that vertex to the center of the cross section) or θ = ArcSin[1.629/(75*Sqrt (2))]
