When defining material properties for nonlinear studies, the required material properties depend on the selected material model. The Material dialog box lists the required properties based on the selected material model. In this lesson the von Mises Plasticity (isotropic) material model is used.
To set a material model and input the required material properties:
-
In the Simulation study tree, right-click the nl_clamp icon and select Apply/Edit Material.
-
In the Material dialog box:
- Right-click the Custom Materials folder and select New Category.
- Right-click the newly defined category and select New Material.
-
In the Material Properties box, do the following:
- Select Plasticity - von Mises in the Model Type menu.
- Select English (IPS) in the Units menu.
- In the Name box, type a name for the material, for example, Material 3.
-
In the material properties table, use the Value boxes to set the following values:
- For Elasticity Modulus, type 30e6 (psi).
- For Poisson's Ratio, type 0.28.
- For Yield Strength, type 36000 (psi).
- For Tangent Modulus, type 3000 (psi).
- For Hardening Factor, type 0 (for isotropic hardening).
- Type a value for Mass Density, for example 0.04.
The value of mass density does not affect the results for this problem but it is a required physical property.

Click Apply.

Click Close.
A check mark appears on the nl_clamp icon.
