Toolbox - Settings Dialog Box: Layers

You can specify a predefined layer for each category of entities. A predefined layer specifies a set of predefined settings such as layer color, lineweight, and linetype. Every Mechanical command creates the entity on the predefined layer, regardless of what layer is set current. If the predefined layer does not exist, the command automatically creates the layer. Layers that are created by the command are named mechanical layers.

Use the Layers category of the Toolbox - Settings dialog box to map and manage predefined layers to basic entity types or to Mechanical Toolbox parts, symbols, and tables.

Example:

The AM_HoleFeat command adds 2D representations of holes to your drawing. The command draws the construction lines on the layer predefined in the Layers category of the Toolbox - Settings dialog box. While drawing, the command automatically sets the line type, line weight, and line color properties of construction lines as specified in the predefined layer properties.

To manage predefined layers:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • On the ribbon, click Mechanical Content > Manage > Settings.
    • On the menu, click Mechanical Content > Settings.
    • Type AM_Settings.
  2. In the dialog box, click Layers.

To turn predefined layers on and off:

  • In the Toolbox - Settings dialog box, on the Layers screen, select or clear Enable predefined layering.

To assign a predefined layer to a Mechanical entity:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • On the ribbon, click Mechanical Content > Manage > Settings.
    • On the menu, click Mechanical Content > Settings.
    • Type AM_Settings.
  2. In the dialog box, click Layers.
  3. On the Layers screen, select Enable predefined layering.
  4. In the Entity list, expand the category corresponding to the entity type.
  5. In the row corresponding of the entity to modify, click in the Layer column.
  6. In the Select Layer dialog box, select an existing layer or create a new one.
    • To select an existing layer, select the corresponding line and click OK.
    • To create a new layer, do the following:
      • Click New .
      • In the Name column, type the name of the new layer.
      • Click OK.
  7. Optionally, in LineColor, LineStyle, and LineWeight specify the properties to apply for the entities.

In general, it is recommended to specify "<ByLayer>" for these properties.
