To open the Toolbox - Surface Finish Symbols dialog box:

Do one of the following:

  • Click Surface Finish Symbols (Mechanical toolbar).
  • Click Mechanical Annotate > Symbols > Surface Finish Symbols.

Preview

As you configure the surface finish symbol, the preview changes to show how the symbol will appear in the drawing.

Style

Sets the style of the surface finish.

Select one of the following:

Option Description
Basic Specifies a basic surface finish symbol.
Machining Required Indicates that material removal is required.
Machining Prohibited Indicates that material removal is prohibited.
JIS Basic Specifies a basic JIS surface finish symbol.
JIS Machining Required Specifies a JIS machining surface finish symbol.
JIS Machining Prohibited Indicates that material removal is prohibited.

Properties: Non-JIS symbols

You can set the following properties for Basic, Machining Required, and Machining Prohibited surface finish symbols:

Property Description
Local No all around designation is added to the surface finish symbol.

All around Adds an all around designation to the surface finish symbol.

Lay Direction Indicates the primary direction of the surface pattern.

Select one of the following:
Parallel Indicates that the surface pattern is parallel to the line that represents the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Perpendicular Indicates that the surface pattern is perpendicular to the line that represents the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Angular Indicates that the surface pattern is angular in both directions to the line that represents the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Multidirectional Multidirectional or random pattern.
Circular Indicates that the surface pattern is approximately circular relative to the center of the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Radial Approximately radial relative to the center of the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Protuberant Indicates that the surface pattern is particulate, nondirectional, or protuberant.
No Lay Symbol N/A
Material Removal Allowance Sets the amount of material removed.

The value appears on the left side of the surface finish symbol.
Roughness Min Sets the minimum degree of roughness.
Roughness is the average of values at random spots on the object surface.
These values appear on the upper middle side of the surface finish symbol.
Roughness Max Sets the maximum degree of roughness.
Sampling Length & Other Roughness Values
Roughness Spacing Sets roughness height and width.
These values appear on the right side of the surface finish symbol.
Production Method/Treatment

Settings

Click Settings to open the Toolbox - Settings dialog box, where you can choose settings for leader display, text format, and layer preferences.

The dialog box opens to the Surface Finish Symbol screen of the Annotations category.

When you finish specifying settings, click OK to close the Toolbox - Settings dialog box and return to the Toolbox - Surface Finish Symbols dialog box.

Properties - JIS symbols

JIS Texture Indicates the amount of surface texture to be used with a JIS style, in conjunction with the Roughness Ra and Roughness Rz/Rmax values.
To visually indicate a finer surface texture, attach more JIS texture symbols.
Not available for JIS Machining Prohibited.
Roughness Ra Arithmetic average of the absolute values of the vertical deviations of the roughness profile.
Roughness Rz/Rmax Based on the five highest peaks and lowest valleys over the entire sampling length.
