You can assign a default value that automatically updates the variable associated with a control when a new file is saved or added to the vault.
This example shows how to use the current date as a default value when creating documents using Microsoft Office tools.
To set the date variable to use a default value:
- In the Card Editor, select .
- In the Edit Variables dialog box, under Selected variable, type the variable name Date Created.

Under Selected Attributes:

For Block name, select CustomProperty.
- For Attribute name, type Date Created.
- For file extensions, select the Microsoft Office file types to use the date variable.
- Click OK.
- Open the data card that is associated with Microsoft Office file types.
- Create a date control.

In the Date field properties pane:

Link the control to the Date Created variable.
- Under Default value, select Today's Date.
- Click Save or select .
When new Office files are added to the vault, the
Creation Date variable is updated with the current date.
The date is also written into the file properties.
