Assigning a Default Value to a Date Variable

You can assign a default value that automatically updates the variable associated with a control when a new file is saved or added to the vault.

This example shows how to use the current date as a default value when creating documents using Microsoft Office tools.

To set the date variable to use a default value:

  1. In the Card Editor, select Edit > Variables.
  2. In the Edit Variables dialog box, under Selected variable, type the variable name Date Created.
  3. Under Selected Attributes:
    1. For Block name, select CustomProperty.
    2. For Attribute name, type Date Created.
    3. For file extensions, select the Microsoft Office file types to use the date variable.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Open the data card that is associated with Microsoft Office file types.
  6. Create a date control.
  7. In the Date field properties pane:
    1. Link the control to the Date Created variable.
    2. Under Default value, select Today's Date.
  8. Click Save or select File > Save.
When new Office files are added to the vault, the Creation Date variable is updated with the current date.

The date is also written into the file properties.
