Edit Wires

After you define paths between connectors in the route sub-assembly, you can associate cable/wire data with the paths. The route diameter updates to reflect the diameter of the cables or wires you select for each path.

To add or edit cable/wire data associated with a path:

Click Edit Wires (Electrical toolbar) or Routing, Electrical, Edit Wires.

The Edit Wires PropertyManager appears.

  • If you have previously added wire data, either manually or with a from-to list, it appears in Wire From-To List.

  • If you have not previously added wire data, Wire From-To List is blank.

The icons and color of the text in Wire From-To List indicates the status of the cables, cores, or wires:

Text color

Status

Magenta

The path for the wire is not defined.

Black

The path for the wire is defined.

Red

The path for the wire contains an error. To display the error message, select the wire name, then click Whats Wrong? .

To specify the wires and cables to use:

  1. In the PropertyManager, click Add Wire .

  2. In the dialog box, in Library File, specify the library file you want to use.

All wires and cables available in the library appear in Select Wires. The wires and cables are listed by Wire name or Cable name as defined in the cable/wire library.

  3. In Select Wires, select a wire or cable that you want to use in the assembly, then click Add.

The wire or cable is added to Selected Wires.

  4. Repeat the preceding step to select more wires or cables as needed.

You can select a wire or cable more than once. For example if you need to route a piece of 20g_blue from connector A to connector B, and another piece of 20g_blue from connector A to connector C, add 20g_blue to Selected Wires two times.

  1. Click OK.

The selected wires and cables appear in Wire From-To List in the PropertyManager.

Click to expand a cable listing to show each core.

To specify the path for each wire or cable core:

  1. In the PropertyManager, select a wire or core in Wire From-To List.

  2. Click Select path.

The name of the wire or core is listed above Select segments.

  3. In the graphics area, select the segments of the route that define the path of the selected wire, starting at one connector and ending at another.

The segments appear in Select segments.

To reverse the order of the selections listed in Select Segments, click Reorder. This changes which connector is defined as the From connector and which is defined as the To connector.

  1. Click .

The name of the next wire or core appears above Select segments.

  2. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have defined the path for each wire or core.

  3. Click .

The paths for the wires are defined. The cut length of each wire appears in angle brackets after the wire name. The calculated route diameter updates based on the diameters of the cables or wires you select for each path. The model updates in the graphics area to display approximately the correct diameter.

Notes:

  • When you select a wire name in Wire From-To List, data for that wire (such as Wire/Cable spec and From Component ref) appears in From-To Parameters. In Pin, you can type a name for the connector pin to associate with the wire.

  • If you make many changes to the routes, click Refresh Wires to assure that all wire routes are updated and the route diameters are recalculated.

You can replace a wire or cable after its path has been defined, without losing its path and connectivity data (Component ref and Pin). You can also add a new wire or cable along the same path as an existing wire or cable.

To replace one wire with another:

  1. In the PropertyManager, under Wire From-To List, select the wire or cable you want to replace.

  2. Click Replace Wire .

  3. In the dialog box, select the new wire or cable you want to use, and add it to Selected Wires.

  4. Click OK.

  5. In the message box, click:

    • Yes to delete the existing wire and replace it with the new wire. The new wire assumes the path and connectivity data of the wire it is replacing.

    • No to keep the existing wire, and add the new wire. The new wire assumes the same path and connectivity data as the existing wire.

To repair violations of the minimum bend radius requirements:

  1. Under Wire From-To List, right-click an item that violates minimum bend radius requirements, and select Repair route.

  2. To preview different solutions, do one of the following:

    • Right-click in the graphics area.

    • Click and in the PropertyManager.

  3. To accept a solution, click in the graphics area or click in the PropertyManager.

To delete a wire:

  1. In Wire From-To List, select the wire you want to delete.

  2. Click Delete Wire and click Yes to confirm.
