Smart Components
You create Smart Components from components that you use frequently
that require the addition of associated components and features. Examples:
A connector with mounting screws, nuts, screw
holes, and a cutout
A retaining ring with a groove
A motor with bolts and mounting holes
When you make a component smart, you associate the other components
and features with the Smart Component. When you insert the Smart Component
into an assembly, you can choose whether or not to insert the associated
components and features. The following features can be associated with
a Smart Component:
Extruded bosses and cuts
Revolved bosses and cuts
Simple holes
Hole Wizard holes
You can map configurations of the Smart Component to configurations
of the associated components and features.
You can add auto-sizing capability to cylindrical Smart Components.
When you insert the Smart Component onto a cylindrical component, the
size of the Smart Component adjusts to fit the cylindrical component.
Creating Smart Components
You define a Smart Component in a defining assembly. The following data
is captured in the component as a Smart
Feature
:
External
references to the files of associated components.
Information
to create associated features.
Information
to reconstruct the defining assembly.
After you establish the component
as smart, you no longer need the files for the defining assembly or for
the parts that contain the associated features.
You do still need the files of associated components.

Examining the Definition of Smart Components
You examine the definition of a Smart Component in the Smart Component
document, where all the defining data is stored. See Creating Smart Components.
Inserting Smart Components into Assemblies
You insert a Smart Component into an assembly and position it with mates,
exactly as you do for any other component. Then you activate the Smart Feature
, and
choose the associated components and features to add. See Inserting Smart Components into
Assemblies.
Editing the Definition of Smart Components
You edit the definition of the Smart Component
by reconstructing a temporary assembly from the defining data stored in
the Smart Component document. See Edit Definition of Smart Components.
