Creating the 2D Section

You select the type of 2D simplification option to use, create a 2D section, and define the section depth or the axis of symmetry.

  1. In the 2D Simplification PropertyManager, under Type, select one:

    Plane stress

Use this option for thin linear extrusions where one of the dimensions of the bodies is much smaller than the other two. The forces acting normal to the plane must be negligible. This option is not available for thermal studies.

    Plane strain

Use this option for thick linear extrusions where one of the dimensions of the bodies is much larger than the other two. In the section plane's normal direction, the body does not deform and the forces cannot vary. This option is not available for thermal studies.

    Extruded

Use this option for defining constant thermal loads along the extrusion direction. This option is available only for thermal studies.

    Axisymmetric

Use this option when the geometries, material properties, loads, fixtures, and contact conditions are symmetric about an axis.

  2. For Section plane surface.png , select a reference plane.

The selected section plane should intersect the bodies if you use solids. If you use planar surfaces or sketches, they should lie on the section plane.

  3. For Section depth dim_lin_t1.png, type a value. This option is available only for Plane stress, Plane strain, or Extruded analyses.

This is the value of the thickness normal to the section plane.

  4. For Axis of symmetry , select a reference axis and select Use other side to rotate the sections by180° about the axis. These options are available only for the Axi-symmetric analysis type.

This is the axis about which the geometries, material properties, loads, fixtures, and contact conditions are symmetric.
