Contact Analysis

Contact settings describes the interaction between part boundaries that are initially contacting or come into contact during loading. The contact functionality is available in assembly and multi-body part documents. Contact is available for static, frequency, buckling, thermal, nonlinear, dynamic and drop test studies. The Connections icon appears above the Fixtures icon in the Simulation study tree. Any change in contact conditions requires re-meshing of the model. If you run the study, the software re-meshes automatically.

The right-mouse menu for the Connections icon provides the following contact options:

Types of Contact

You can apply multiple contact conditions to override the global contact setting by adding component contact and local contact sets.
Contact Sets PropertyManager

Use this PropertyManager to define interaction between solids, shells, and beams in a mixed mesh. Bonding beams to shells or solid faces is done automatically for touching components.
Component Contact PropertyManager

Use the Component Contact PropertyManager to select components and set the default contact condition for all areas that the selected components share amongst themselves.
Contact Visualization Plot

With a contact visualization plot, you can view how bodies are connected in multibody parts and assemblies. Before you run the analysis, you can detect the areas of contact applied by the global contact settings and any local contact sets.
