Subsurface

The Subsurface Appearance Type works in high quality rendering modes only. It is useful for substances such as milk, teeth, some stones, and honey.

Parameters

Absorption Sets the color that is absorbed as light passes through the appearance.
Scattering Sets the degree of bouncing light within the appearance. More scattering makes a cloudier appearance.
Reflection Sets the color of light that bounces off the appearance's surface.
IOR (Index of Refraction) Sets the surface reflectivity and diffraction.
Color Density Determines the density of the color on the applied object.
Roughness Controls the highlight size in reflected light. The rougher the appearance, the more it diffuses the highlight (the larger and less focused the highlight becomes).
