To graph displacement in the Z direction:
-
In the Simulation study tree, right-click the Results
folder and select Define Time History Plot.
-
In the PropertyManager under Response, select:
- Predefined locations.
- The two nodes in the list box.
- Displacement in the menu under Y-axis.

UZ is negative since the global Z points up and the bar is shortening. The maximum magnitude of UZ is about 0.928 and occurs at time 31 microseconds from impact. Notice that this location starts going up after this instant.
The length of the bar at this instant is (2.347-0.928=1.419 cm
). Experimental results showed 1.319 cm
(Wilkins M.L. and Guinan M.W., "Impact of Cylinders on a Rigid Boundary", Journal of Applied Physics, Volume 44, No. 3, 1973).
