Running the Motion Study

Calculate the motion and examine the results.

  1. Click Calculate (MotionManager toolbar).
  2. Right-click Mates (MotionManager tree) and click Degrees of Freedom.
The Degrees of Freedom dialog box provides an estimate of the degrees of freedom and redundant mates. For this model with one actual degree of freedom, there are 12=1-(-11) redundant mates, including the Piston Male Align mate.
You can view the estimated mate redundancies from the modified name description, (12) Redundancies, for Mates (MotionManager tree).
  3. Close the dialog box and expand Results (MotionManager tree).
  4. Right-click Plot1<Reaction Moment1> and click Show Plot.

To view the plot specification, right-click Plot1<Reaction Moment1> (MotionManager tree) and click Edit Feature .

The plot displays the reaction moment of the coincident mate between the male piston and the connector. You expect the reaction moment to peak at the same time that the piston moves through its maximum displacement, which occurs at around 2.5 seconds in the motion simulation. The calculated result plot does not indicate this.

The result plot is inaccurate for the following reasons:
    • The model is overconstrained.
    • The redundant Piston Male Align mate used to calculate the plot is ignored.
