Performance Settings with OpenGL

The Use software OpenGL option can help you view CAD models if your graphics card is outdated.

To access the Use software OpenGL option, with no documents open, click Tools > Options > System Options > Performance.

When to use the Use software OpenGL option:
  • Your computer has a very old Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) or no GPU at all (For example, software emulation on a VDI).
  • To diagnose a GPU issue (driver or hardware). If the action works in software OpenGL, it indicates that the driver or the GPU is at fault.
Software OpenGL does not support everything. For example, it does not support RealView graphics.

When you select the Use software OpenGL option, it turns the following options on or off:

  • Turns on:

High quality for normal view mode

    (Performance Options)

  • Turns off:

High quality for dynamic view mode

    (Performance Options)

    Display shaded planes

    (Display and Selection Options)

    Top/Bottom Gradient colors

    (Color Options)

    Display plane when shaded

    (Sketch Options)

    Shadows

(Click View Settings (Heads-Up View toolbar) and clear Shadows in shaded mode)

When you clear the Use Software OpenGL option, it turns the following options on or off:

Use Software OpenGL Option is Unavailable

If the Use software OpenGL option is unavailable, do as follows to make it available:

  1. In Tools > Options > System Options > Performance, clear Enhanced graphics performance (requires SOLIDWORKS restart).
  2. Restart SOLIDWORKS.
  3. With no document open, browse to Tools > Options > System Options > Performance
The Use software OpenGL option should now be available.
The Use software OpenGL option is only available when you turn off enhanced graphics and no document is open.
