Replacing Data

You can replace data across a whole electrical project, for example replace one manufacturer part with another, or one set of symbols with another.

  1. To access Replace data, do one of the following:
    • In the SOLIDWORKS Electrical 3D Project toolbar, click Replace data .
    • Click Tools > SOLIDWORKS Electrical > Process > Replace data .
    • Click Process > Replace data .
The Wizard for replacement of project data dialog box opens. The wizard has several tabs and each relates to a specific information type.

This wizard uses a configuration file defined in the next step. This configuration saves all actions you carry out during this data replacement. It can be reused for another data replacement.

  2. In the Wizard for replacement of project data dialog box, click the tab you want to manage:
    • Selection
    • Manufacturer parts
    • Cable references
    • Symbols
    • Title blocks
    • Saving
    • Finish
  3. In the Selection tab, select the configuration to use. The Selection tab allows you to define the data types to be processed during the replacement process.
    1. Check the data types to be managed. This directly affects the available data tabs at the top of the dialog.
Data Select ERP data Ignore warning
Manufacturer parts Allows you to include the manufacturer parts in the replacement process. Uses ERP provided manufacturer part data to replace the existing data. Replaces the data even when the new manufacturer part has more circuits or terminals.
Cable references Allows you to include cable references in the replacement process. Uses ERP provided cable reference data to replace the existing project data. Replaces the data even when the new cable reference has more cable cores.
Symbols Allows you to include symbols in the replacement process. Uses ERP provided symbol data if configured in the project settings. Replaces the data even when the new symbol has more connection points.
Title blocks Allows you to include title blocks in the replacement process. Uses ERP provided title block data to replace the existing title block configuration. Not applicable.
    2. Click Next to go through the data tabs, or click directly on any particular data tab to manage those replacements.
    3. You can copy and paste to edit the data in excel or another spreadsheet app. Select the cells you want to edit and press Ctrl+C, then in the spreadsheet app, press Ctrl+V to paste the data. Edit the data and then copy and paste it back into the app.
  4. In the Wizard for replacement of project data dialog box, if you click Manufacturer parts, Cable references, Symbols, or Title blocks, the following options appear based on your selection:
    Option Description
State Indicates the validity of the selected manufacturer part, reference, symbol, or title block. Double-click the State field to display information related to why the replacement is not valid.

If an inconsistent reference is selected and checked for replacement, it is applied regardless of the potential discrepancy.

Existing Instance Indicates the number of instances located throughout the electrical project.
Manufacturer Displays the manufacturer names located within the electrical project.
Reference Displays the electrical project manufacturer part or cable reference.
Manufacturer (Replaced by) Indicates the manufacturer name that will replace the existing instances of manufacturer.
Reference (Replaced by) Indicates the manufacturer part name that will replace the existing instances. Double-click the field to access the Manufacturer part selection dialog. The selection made here populates the Manufacturer (Replaced by) field.
Name Displays the symbol or title block names located within the electrical project.
Name (Replaced by) Indicates the symbol or title block name that will replace the existing instances of the symbol or title block.
Select Check boxes are displayed when the Manufacturer and Reference (Replaced by) fields are filled for manufacturer part and cable reference and Name (Replaced by) field is filled for symbols and title blocks. Selecting the check box indicates that the replacement should be made. If a previously saved configuration file is loaded, you have to clear certain selections.
Click to remove the selected manufacturer part, cable reference, symbol, or title block data.
  5. In the Saving tab, select Save data without correspondence to store the items that have not been set for replacement. The Saving tab saves the settings made in the various tabs to a configuration file. You can use this configuration file in the future for replacing data.
  6. Click Finish to launch the data replacement. The databases and drawings are automatically updated.
    You cannot reverse this command.

Replace Data displays all the electrical project data available for replacement (such as symbols or manufacturer parts) and lets you select the items you want to replace.
