Using the Standalone Viewer

You can use the SolidWorks Enterprise PDM standalone viewer to preview and mark up files that are not in an Enterprise PDM vault.

You can also use the standalone viewer to view vault files.

When you distribute SolidWorks drawings (.slddrw) or assembly files (.sldasm) to be viewed with the eDrawings Viewer, subsequent changes to referenced parts and assemblies are not reflected in the distributed files.

As a best practice, distribute drawings and assembly files in eDrawings format, which always requires updates when referenced parts are modified. If this is not possible, redistribute the updated SolidWorks parent drawings and assemblies each time you modify the referenced parts.

To use the standalone viewer:

  1. Right-click a file outside the vault and select View/Markup or select a file in the vault and click the View File tool.

  1. Use the toolbar buttons to:

    • Open a document in the file viewer.

    • View the Properties dialog.

    • Edit the document in its native application.

    • Refresh the view window and properties.

  1. Click in the preview pane to activate the viewer.

The shortcut menu and options vary depending on the file type and associated viewer. You can zoom, pan, and rotate CAD images. The viewer for SolidWorks files is eDrawings.

To exclude file types:

  1. From the standalone viewer, select View, Excluded File Types.

  2. Type a comma-separated list of file extensions according to the example provided in the Excluded File Types dialog, and click OK
