Exporting to the IFC 4.0 Format

To make it easier to share design data with Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems, the SOLIDWORKS software supports exporting to the IFC 4.0 format.

You can map the following data from a SOLIDWORKS file to an IFC 4.0 file:

  • Geometrical data
  • Material and mass properties
  • Tessellated geometry
  • Face and body colors

Export to the IFC 4.0 format is supported for:

  • Parts
  • Top-level assemblies
  • Multibody parts
  • Weldment parts

To export to the IFC 4.0 format:

  1. Click File > Save As.
  2. In the Save As dialog box:
    1. For Save as type, select IFC 4 (*.ifc).
    2. Click Options.
  3. In the Export Options dialog box:
    1. Select whether to output the IFC 4.0 file as OmniClass or UniClass2, and expand the items to select the specific class to use.
    2. Select Units.
    3. Under IFC4 Export, select one of the following:
      • BREP
      • BREP and Tessellation
      • Tessellation
    4. Click OK.
