Texture Mapping

If you select an applied appearance on a part in a model, and the appearance includes textures, then you can customize its texture mapping.

A texture is a bitmap image that you apply to the surface of a 3D object to give it detail. Texture maps can be photographic images or procedural textures. You can apply them in each of the appearance channels of an object using a variety of mapping or projection methods. A procedural texture is a texture map that is generated by a mathematical function, rather than a real-world bitmap image projected over the surface of an object.

You can customize texture mappings in the following ways:
  • Visually with the texture manipulator.
  • Numerically using basic UV mapping or advanced mapping.

  • Using the Texture Manipulator

    The texture manipulator modifies the 3D projection of a texture in an appearance before converting the texture to UV coordinates on the surface of the part.

  • Adding and Editing Textures in Appearances

    You can add a 2D image as a texture to an appearance. When you apply an appearance with textures to a part in a model, the textures are mapped on the part according to the texture properties.

  • Texture Mapping Parameters

    The Objects tab in the Palette includes the following Texture Mapping parameters which appear when you select a part in a model.
