Assigning Material Properties to the Part

The part is made of Nitinol.

  1. In the Simulation study tree, right-click nl_archwire and select Apply/Edit Material.
  2. In the Material dialog box:
    1. Right-click the Custom Materials folder and select New Category.
    2. Right-click the newly defined category and select New Material.
  3. In the Material dialog box, on the Properties tab, do the following:
    1. Set Model Type to Nitinol.
    2. Set Units to SI - N/m^2 (Pa).
    3. In the Name box, type Nitinol Material.
  4. In the material properties table, enter the following values:
    1. For Elastic Modulus , type 5e10.
    2. For Poisson's Ratio, type 0.3.
    3. For Initial Yield Stress (Tensile Loading), type 5e8.
    4. For Final Yield Stress (Tensile Loading), type 5e8.
    5. For Initial Yield Stress (Tensile Unloading), type 3e8.
    6. For Final Yield Stress (Tensile Unloading), type 3e8.
    7. For Initial Yield Stress (Compressive Loading), type 7e8.
    8. For Final Yield Stress (Compressive Loading), type 7e8.
    9. For Initial Yield Stress (Compressive Unloading), type 4e8.
    10. For Final Yield Stress (Compressive Unloading), type 4e8.
    11. For Ultimate Plastic Strain Measure (Tension), type 0.2.
    12. Type a value for Mass Density, for example 1020.
The value of mass density does not affect the results for this problem but it is a required physical property.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click Close.
