Using Tree View (Add-In)

You can use Tree View to understand the structure of a large or complex SolidWorks assembly, or to see where a part or sub-assembly fits into the larger assembly .

The Tree View window displays parts, assemblies, and drawings as a hierarchical tree structure, with parents appearing above, and children appearing below the selected part.

Tree View tool UI

1 Where Used and References buttons—Toggles the Where Used and References views on and off. When a view is active, the button is displayed with a blue highlight as shown.
2 Scale slider—Used to increase or decrease the scale of the objects in the Tree View tool window.
3 Reset button—Resets the scale to 100%.
4 Expand/Collapse button—Expands or collapses one or all nodes in the Tree View window.
5 Tree node—Each node represents a part, assembly, or drawing, and contains a preview image.
6 Navigator window—Used to easily navigate large assemblies.
7 Expand/Collapse Navigator Window button—Expands or collapses the Navigator window.
You can view files in two ways:
  • Where Used—Displays only the relationship of the selected part or sub-assembly to the overall structure of the full assembly. In this view, only parent assemblies are shown; no child parts or assemblies are displayed. This is useful for simplifying the structure of large or complex assemblies to focus on only the structure of relationships between assemblies.
  • References—Displays all child sub-assemblies and parts of the selected assembly in a tree structure. This expanded view is useful for exploring child assemblies in greater detail
You can use both views together to display both child and parent relationships.
