Assigning Material

When defining material properties for nonlinear studies, the required material properties depend on the selected material model. The Material dialog box lists the required properties based on the selected material model. For this lesson, you will use the Linear Elastic Isotropic material model.

To assign custom material properties to the part:

  1. In the Study 1 study tree, right-click the part icon and select Apply/Edit Material.
  2. In the Material dialog box do the following:
    1. Right-click the Custom Materials folder and select New Category.
    2. Right-click the newly defined category and select New Material.
    3. In the Material properties box, do the following:
      • Make sure that Model Type is set to Linear Elastic Isotropic.
      • Set Units to SI - N/m^2 (Pa).
      • Type Material 1 for Name.
    4. In the properties table, do the following:
      • Type 10.92e10 in the Value cell for Elastic Modulus.
      • Type 0.3 in the Value cell for Poisson's Ratio.
      • Type a value like 1020 in the Value cell for Mass Density.
The value of mass density does not affect the results for this problem but it is a required physical property.
    5. Click Apply.
    6. Click Close.
Notice that a check mark appears on the part icon and the material name (-Material 1-) appears next to the icon.
