Using the Weldment Cut List BOM Type

To extract and display the length and quantity of weldment components in SOLIDWORKS parts, you use the weldment cut list BOM type.

This BOM type operates with a SOLIDWORKS part data card with a variable mapped to the custom property UNIT_OF_MEASURE, which extracts the value of the BOM quantity property defined for SOLIDWORKS cut list items.

The default versions of the BOM type and data card that are installed with SOLIDWORKS PDM 2009 and later contain this mapping. If you upgrade a vault created in an earlier version of SOLIDWORKS PDM, you can import the default BOM type and data card.

  • To install the default weldment cut list BOM type, import <install_dir>\Default Data\BOM_WeldmentCutList_<language>.cex.
  • To install the default SOLIDWORKS part data card, import <install_dir>\Default Cards\all(sldprt_prt)_<language>.crd.

You can also configure an older SOLIDWORKS part data card to work with the weldment cut list BOM type.

To configure a SOLIDWORKS part data card and create a weldment cut list BOM:

  1. Expand Cards, expand File Cards, and double-click SOLIDWORKS Part Card (sldprt).
  2. If the card does not contain an edit box with a variable to hold the length value from the weldment cut list, add an edit box and select BOM Quantity as the Variable name.
  3. Click Variables.
  4. In the Edit Variables dialog box, under Attributes:
    1. For Block name, select CustomProperty.
    2. For Attribute name, enter UNIT_OF_MEASURE.
    3. For file extensions, enter sldprt, sldasm.
    4. Click OK.
  5. Save the card.
  6. Expand Bill of Materials and double-click Weldment Cutlist.
  7. In the Bill of Materials dialog box, to define a column to hold the component length, under Selected column:
    1. For Variable, select BOM Quantity.
    2. For Name, enter Length.
    3. Specify the column Width and Alignment.
  8. To define a column to hold the component quantity:
    1. For Variable, select <Reference Count (BOM Quantity disregarded)>.
    2. For Name, enter Qty.
    3. Specify the column Width and Alignment.
The Length for weldment components is extracted from the component property that is defined as the BOM quantity in SOLIDWORKS. When the weldment part is checked in to the vault, the check-in command lists all weldment components as references.
  • On the Contains tab for the part, right-click a component and select Properties. The length is shown in the BOM Quantity variable.
  • On the Bill of Materials tab, the Weldment Cut List displays the length and quantity for each weldment component.

SOLIDWORKS PDM extracts and displays weldment cut list properties for all configurations of parts that you create or save in SOLIDWORKS 2019 or later. Also, you must add Rebuild on Save Mark for all configurations. See SOLIDWORKS HELP : Generating Configuration Data for more information.
