Assembly mates can overconstrain component motion, resulting in
inaccuracies in motion study calculations. These overconstraining mates are redundant. In
this tutorial, you learn four techniques to reduce or eliminate mate redundancies. You can
apply these techniques when designing models for Motion Analysis studies.

You perform the following sequence of techniques in this tutorial:
- Create a rigid group to ignore redundant mates in motion calculations.
- Replace redundant mate pairs that form a hinge with hinge mates.
- Replace redundant mates with mate primitives.
- Replace mates with bushings.
Prerequisites
Before you try this tutorial, be familiar with the following concepts:
- Building assemblies in the SOLIDWORKS software
- SOLIDWORKS mates
- Basic concepts of motion studies
- Physical modeling, including degrees of freedom
